Friday 29th June

We didn’t wake up until 8.15am this morning – late for us. In fact I was awake first and left Richard snoring gently while I made the tea. It turns out that he had been awake for a good part of the night worrying that Millie might get lost in the undergrowth! He had visions of us having to stay put for four or five days while she wandered round in circles trying to find her way home. Of course she was curled up on sofa when we got up :-)

We continued on our way on a windy, grey day. Our progress today was slow as the canal is very weedy and we kept having to stop to clear the prop – we only managed 7 miles and 7 locks, however it turned out to be lovely afternoon.

We stopped in Retford for lunch and then strolled into town – it wasn’t far. The town is quite nice with quite a few independent shops. There is also a smallish Asda right by the canal which is helpful for the heavy things.

After Retford you go right out into the country and start climbing – we did 5 locks and each time the view got better. We pulled over for the night just above Forest Top Lock not to be confused with the previous lock which was called Forest Middle Top Lock!
