Wednesday 27th June

An earlyish start as we needed to be ready to go through the lock at 9am, however the Lock-keeper didn’t even arrive until 9.10am! When we are on tidal rivers Richard always wears a life jacket but when he went to get it out this morning the inflator toggle must have been trapped as it inflated inside the wardrobe! We had fun and games trying to get it out!

We went through the lock and onto the Trent at 9.25am. The GPS reckoned we were doing about 6mph going down the river! At Gate Burton there is a folly which belongs to Gate Burton Hall. This was built around 1770-84 for the Hutton family, with later additions and alterations, it is now two residences. The temple Folly known as Burton Chateau was built in 1747 by James Paine which is, in fact, before the Hall was built.

We sped past Gainsborough but there was no way we could have stopped – the tide wouldn’t have let us and we soon had West Stockwith Lock in sight. We knew that we had to go past and do a U turn to get in but Richard hadn’t reckoned on us being swept down stream sideways! It was interesting but he was in full control and we were soon safely in a very deep lock. As we popped up we found ourselves in a pretty basin. We stopped for water and were told about a Co-op in Misterton so we headed up the canal and moored up for lunch and I walked and did some shopping. To start with the canal was very narrow and very shallow – Richard said that if it didn’t get any better he was going to turn round! However it did get better and we found a lovely Millie spot where we moored for the night. It didn’t take Millie long to go off exploring – she obviously likes the canals better than the rivers too as she hasn’t really been going out that much.

Well today was weigh in day and I am really disappointed as I have only lost 1lb but I must look at it this way in that it’s a pound that I wouldn’t have lost if I hadn’t been trying.
