Monday 30th July

A day off today.  We had planned to take a trip on the open top sightseeing bus but after a 20 minute wait at the bus stop we gave up.  A later phone call found out that there is no open top bus this year!  Wake up Yorkshire.com and get your website updated!

clip_image002We did, however, visit the Royal Armouries which is situated right beside us and, would you believe, the entry if free!  It is an excellent interactive museum though, to start with, rather randomly put together.  I really enjoyed the higher floors as they were given over to Oriental exhibits which I found very interesting.  The two exhibits which I found most interesting were a coat made in Rajastan in the early 19th Century.  It had been covered in the scales of an anteater which had been decorated in gold.  The other was a turban made of cane and wrapped in blue cotton.  It was fitted with six throwing quoits and a long plaited steel wire retaining three small steel knives.  This was made in Lahore in the 18th Century.  Other sections are dedicated to war, hunting, self defence and tournament.  We also listened to a talk on the Battle of Bosworth – poor Richard III!

When we got back to the boat we had chance to watch our own spectacle as a narrow boat came into the dock followed by a hire boat.  The wind is quite strong today and pretty freaky and both boats ended upclip_image004 at 90 º then 180º to the way they had come in.  The trip boat skipper ran round to try and help and he eventually got them into the private moorings (no one seems to take any notice of the fact they say private).  I have to say that the freaky wind even made it difficult for the trip boat to turn round!

We are picking up visitors tomorrow at Aire Valley Marina :-)  My sister, Penny, and her husband Jim, along with their dog Niamh – you may remember them from last year when we cruised in company doing the Avon Ring.  They are in the process of selling their boat and as Jim has always wanted to do the Leeds and Liverpool they are joining us for a few days.  I’m not sure what Millie is going to say about sharing her boat with a DOG!  She is pretty pissed off as it is being stuck inside while we are in Leeds :-(
