Friday 8th August

We woke up to a very wet and dreary day but we had to press on as we needed to get to Abingdon - in fact the trip turned out quite nice! We had three locks to do, the first one being Days Lock where the lock keeper managed to get 4 narrow boats and a 30ft motor cruiser in! The last lock was Cullum Lock and we were told to go right up to the gates – when the sluices opened there was a real jumble of water and it was quite difficult to hold the boat still. As we came into Abingdon we could see that there weren’t very many mooring spaces left but, as usual, we managed to find one – and it’s a good Millie place too! After lunch we walked into town and for some reason I was rather disappointed :-( I really enjoyed my stay here last year but the town didn’t seem to have the same buzz as before. We were joined this evening by Victoria, who had brought up some clothes that I need to go to a funeral next week. We had planned a BBQ and were just thinking that we would have to cook it in the oven when the rain stopped and it cheered up a bit – so Richard cooked outside.
